Preparing for your trip to the Andaman Islands

1. When to go?
The best time to visit is from September to May, with peak season from October to March. December is a popular travel month, so prices may be higher. You can also visit in June and July to experience the islands during the monsoon. See Andaman Weather for more information.

2. What to pack?
Pack lightweight, breathable clothing such as cotton and linen, including loose-fitting t-shirts, shorts, and sundresses. Don’t forget swimwear, a hat or sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes, and water shoes for activities like snorkelling. If you plan to visit religious sites, bring modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. A light rain jacket or umbrella is also advisable, as sudden showers are common.

3. Travel Documents Required?
For foreign nationals, ensure you have your passport, visa, and any required permits. Some areas of the Andaman Islands require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), so obtain this in advance.

4. Are Medicines Available?
Although over-the-counter (OTC) medicines are available in some locations, we recommend that you bring any essential medications you may need, along with a basic first-aid kit.

5. How Do I Plan My Budget?
Decide on a rough budget and divide it into categories such as transport, sightseeing, and hotel reservations. You might also consider booking a tour package that includes meals.

6. Are There ATMs?
There are ATMs in Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil Island, but it’s wise to carry some cash. UPI apps like Google Pay and Paytm also work well in the Andaman Islands.

Tips for Safe Stay

1. What sun protection should I take while exploring the islands?
The tropical sun can be intense, even on cloudy days. Apply a high SPF sunscreen (30+) regularly, especially before water activities. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and light, breathable clothing for extended outdoor exposure. Stay hydrated throughout the day—carry water with you during excursions. Heat exhaustion can happen quickly in humid conditions, so take breaks in the shade and listen to your body.

2. Are there any water safety tips I should know?
While the beaches are beautiful, ocean currents can be unpredictable. Swim only in designated safe areas and avoid going too far from shore. During monsoon season (June-September), beaches may have stronger undercurrents. If you're not a confident swimmer, consider wearing a life jacket during water activities. Never swim alone, especially early morning or late evening. For snorkelling and scuba diving, always follow your guide's instructions and stay within designated zones.

3. What precautions should I take during water sports and outdoor activities?
Always wear appropriate safety gear provided by activity operators—life jackets for boat trips, helmets for biking, and proper footwear for trekking. For scuba diving and snorkelling, ensure you're using a licensed operator and follow all safety briefings. Don't attempt water sports if you've consumed alcohol. When renting bikes, wear a helmet (mandatory), have a valid driving license, and drive cautiously on island roads, which can be narrow with unexpected turns. Check weather conditions before heading out for boat trips or beach activities.

4. What should I know about sand flies at the beaches?
Sand flies are a natural part of island life and are most active at dawn and dusk along coastal areas. We recommend using insect repellent and wearing light, protective clothing during beach visits at these times. Please note that sand fly bites can look very similar to bed bug bites—both appear as small, itchy red marks. If you notice bites after visiting the beach, they're likely from sand flies encountered outdoors rather than from your room. We maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and conduct regular pest control throughout the property. If you have any concerns, our team is always here to help.

5. Should I be concerned about mosquitoes and other insects?
Mosquitoes are common in tropical areas and are most active during early morning and evening. Use mosquito repellent, especially around dawn and dusk. We recommend wearing long, light-colored clothing during these times. Our room windows are equipped with insect nets, and we conduct regular fumigation. Please keep windows and doors closed, especially during dawn and dusk, to prevent insects from entering your room. Avoid storing food in your room as it can immediately attract ants and other insects. If you're particularly sensitive to insect bites, consider bringing antihistamine cream. While diseases like dengue and malaria are rare in the Andamans, taking preventive measures is always wise.

6. What should I know about local wildlife and marine life?
The Andaman Islands are home to diverse wildlife. While exploring beaches or forests, maintain a respectful distance from all animals. Do not feed wildlife, as this can make them aggressive. In the water, avoid touching coral reefs (they're fragile and some species can cause cuts or stings), and watch out for jellyfish, especially during certain seasons. If you notice any marine creatures while swimming, calmly move away. Wear water shoes to protect your feet from sharp rocks, coral, and sea urchins.

7. How can I protect my belongings during my stay?
Use the in-room safety deposit box for valuables, passports, and cash. When visiting beaches or going on excursions, avoid carrying expensive jewellery or large amounts of cash. Keep your room locked when you leave. Be cautious with your belongings at crowded places like markets or jetties. We recommend keeping photocopies or digital copies of important documents separate from the originals.

8. Are there any food and water safety tips?
We serve purified drinking water at Matsya, and we recommend drinking only bottled or purified water throughout your stay. While exploring the island, be cautious about street food if you have a sensitive stomach—choose vendors that appear clean and busy. Wash your hands frequently, especially before meals. If trying local seafood at outside restaurants, ensure it's freshly prepared and properly cooked.

9. What should I do in case of a medical emergency?
For emergencies, contact our front desk immediately—we can arrange transport to the nearest medical facility. The primary health centre is located in the main market area. We recommend bringing your regular medications and a basic first-aid kit with you. Travel insurance that covers medical emergencies is highly advisable when visiting remote island locations. Our staff can assist you in locating pharmacies or medical services if needed.
