Andaman Islands: Fun Facts and Tips for a Great Trip
Time Zone:
Did you know that the Andaman Islands are in a different time zone from mainland India? The local time in the Andamans is nearly an hour ahead of Indian Standard Time (IST). However, for administrative reasons, Andaman follows IST. Check time with the locals to ensure you don’t miss out on the fabulous sunrise at Kalapathar Beach and sunset at Radhanagar Beach.
Skin Care:
UV index (an international standard measurement of the strength of the sunburn-producing ultraviolet (UV) radiation at a particular place and time) in Andamans varies from a high of 14.6 in April to 9.8 in December. Try to avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If outdoors, seek shade and wear sun-protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses. Generously apply broad spectrum SPF 15+ sunscreen every 1.5 hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating. Bright surfaces, such as sand, water, and snow, will increase UV exposure.
Sunset at Radhanagar Beach:
Radhanagar Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the Andamans and is known for its stunning sunsets. Plan your trip to the beach early, so you can enjoy the view as the sun goes down.
Air-Conditioned Buses to Radhanagar Beach:
If you're planning to visit Radhanagar Beach, you don't need to worry about transportation. Government air-conditioned buses ply regularly from Matsya’s vicinity to the beach, so you can travel in comfort.
Mobile Connectivity Issues:
The Andaman Islands are known for their natural beauty, but they can also be challenging when it comes to connectivity. Some areas may have limited mobile connectivity, so it's a good idea to check with your service provider before you travel.
Marine Life:
The Andaman Islands are famous for their coral reefs and marine life. Snorkelling and scuba diving are popular activities, and you can spot a variety of marine species, including dugongs (rare), sea turtles (seasonal and at specific beaches), and colourful fish.
Local Cuisine:
Don't miss the chance to try the local cuisine in the Andamans. Seafood is a speciality, and you can savour dishes such as fish curry, crab masala, and prawn fry. Vegetarian options are also available.
The Andaman Islands have something for everyone, from adventure enthusiasts to history buffs to beach lovers. Keep these fun facts and tips in mind, and you're sure to have a great trip.
